Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi is now one of the world’s most famous people on Instagram. After Argentina’s World Cup victory over France, he posted a collection of pictures celebrating the win and wracked up 57 million likes.
He smashed the record previously held by Instagram’s world_record_egg, which had 57 million likes at one point. He also surpassed TikTok’s Bella Poarch, who has more than 58 million likes on her post.
In addition to having plenty of Instagram followers, he continues to gain fame around the world, even outside of soccer and sports.
1. He smashed the World Record Egg
In the wake of Argentina’s historic World Cup win over France, soccer star Lionel Messi broke a few records on Instagram. His post celebrating the Argentine team’s success was so popular that it’s now the most-liked post on the platform.
The picture, which features Messi celebrating his first international trophy, received 62 million likes, making it the most-liked Instagram post of all time. It smashed a record previously held by a photo of a world-record egg, which had 56 million likes.
But that record-breaking egg is still hanging on in second place, thanks to a new contender. On Tuesday morning, Guinness World Records revealed that Messi’s Instagram post had surpassed the egg stock photo as the most-liked photo on the social media platform.
But it seems the egg wasn’t happy about the outcome. Rather than repost its original post, the World Record Egg took to Instagram stories and asked users who they think is the greatest of all time: Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?
2. He beat TikTok’s Bella Poarch
Lionel Messi isn’t just the best player on the pitch, he’s also Instagram’s most famous user. In fact, the Argentine star recently hit 300 million followers on the social media platform.
After winning the World Cup with Argentina, he posted a gallery of pictures with his team holding the prestigious trophy, and it went on to become Instagram’s most liked post of all time. It surpassed a picture of an egg that was previously the most liked photo on Instagram.
The soccer star’s Instagram post now has more than 69 million likes, and it’s also beating a viral TikTok video of Bella Poarch lip-syncing to Millie B’s “M to the B”.
It’s a great achievement for both Lionel Messi and Bella Poarch, who have risen to fame on the internet by posting lip-synching videos on TikTok. And it looks like they’re set for some more popularity in the future!
3. He’s now the most-liked Instagram post of all time
Argentina’s soccer star Lionel Messi is one of the most recognised figures in modern sport. He’s a seven-time Ballon d’Or winner and is known for his incredible skills on the pitch, as well as being an Instagram superstar.
The Argentine’s latest post, which celebrates his team’s victory at the World Cup, has become the most-liked Instagram post of all time. The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed Tuesday that Messi’s celebrations are now the most-liked post in the platform’s history with 62 million likes as of publication.
Earlier this year, Messi became the second celebrity to reach 400 million Instagram followers. Cristiano Ronaldo is still the most followed person on the platform with 517 million followers, but that is set to change this month as Messi’s followers have grown by five million in the last 30 days alone.
After a successful tournament in Qatar, it’s no surprise that Messi’s social media account has taken off. His latest post is one of eight that have already made it to the list of most-liked posts on the photo-sharing app.
4. He’s now the most-liked soccer player of all time
Lionel Messi is a legend of soccer, regarded as one of the best players to ever play the game. He is also known for his incredible skills on the pitch, including the ability to dribble and score goals while taking on defenders with ease.
It wasn’t until he won the World Cup with Argentina that he began to become a household name, but his rise to fame was quickly followed by a huge increase in social media followers. Now, he has over 400 million followers on Instagram – the second most popular player on the platform.
Before the World Cup, he was already a part of a record for most likes on an Instagram post from an athlete – a picture of him and Cristiano Ronaldo playing chess as part of a Louis Vuitton ad. But his victory over France in the World Cup has boosted his profile even further, with his post now having more likes than Ronaldo’s ad, which received 42 million likes!
